Building a digital ecology that empowers people

Working with a global network of universities and partners, we challenge the impossible: holding tech companies accountable and empowering people — particularly consumers and workers.

Frontier Technology’s mission is to dismantle the power imbalance between big tech and society. We do this by shining a light on the big tech business model, seeking greater accountability to protect people’s rights online, and bringing transparency to the global patchwork of tech policy.

Frontier Tech has used shareholder activism to create greater accountability and support many tech workers. We have also collaborated with a group of small Australian publishers to collectively bargain with Google and secure a commercial agreement for them that will protect local journalism, support media diversity and allow independent publishers to flourish.

Building on our successful shareholder resolution work to create greater accountability, we will continue to empower tech workers. Our focus will be on whistleblower protections because we believe whistleblowers can have an outsized impact on the tech industry, and this work will be coupled with a grassroots education campaign. Separately, we will continue to support the rights of small publishers globally and examine mechanisms needed to address the bargaining imbalance with big tech.

We are establishing the Frontier Tech XR30 Knowledge Fund to examine the ultimate tech frontier of the ‘metaverse’ and study its likely impact on our health and well-being, particularly for women and children. This funding will empower experts and global policymakers to consider the challenges posed by the next generation of computing and social media, and position Frontier Tech as an advocate for an equitable digital future.

Corporations must be made accountable for their use of artificial intelligence, so Minderoo Foundation is supporting a project to design a robust accountability framework designed to eliminate discrimination, particularly as it impacts the most vulnerable in our society. Transparency and accountability in trade negotiations are also key, so we will work closely with civil society to advocate for stronger digital protections for citizens.
